Advancing Women's Rights

Advancing the rights of women and girls by, among other things, institutionalizing equality. This entails equalizing the voice in the political arena, enhancing equitable gender diversity in the corporate sector, amplifying the stories of courageous Women Human Rights Defenders, combatting gender-based human trafficking and sexual violence in armed conflict, focusing on the plight and pain of Indigenous Canadian women and children, and bolstering the role of women in peace negotiations, peace protection and conflict resolution

ADVANCING WOMEN'S RIGHTS

Advancing Women's Rights-02.jpg

The promotion of gender equality and the attainment of women’s rights is the most effective approach to reducing poverty and building a more inclusive, peaceful and prosperous world. Without the full participation, protection and promotion of women and girls, peace, security, economic stability, justice and the betterment of the human condition will remain elusive goals we continue to strive for but fail to realize. To help women and girls actualize their rights, we must change how countries and communities work enabling them to exercise the agency and self-determination they are entitled to as we set out in search of a better world.

INSTITUTIONALIZING EQUALity

The Centre promotes education, awareness, advocacy and action with respect to the following initiatives:

  1. Equality – equalizing the voice in the political and parliamentary arena;

  2. Diversity – enhancing equitable gender diversity in the corporate sector;

  3. Dignity – amplifying the stories of courageous Women Human Rights Defenders from around the world

  4. Security – combatting gender-based human trafficking and sexual violence in armed conflict

  5. Justice – focusing particularly on the plight and pain of Indigenous Canadian women and children and their compelling justice claims

  6. Peace – bolstering the role of women in peace negotiations, peace protection and conflict resolution

Women human rights defenders

Accordingly, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the RWCHR launched and hosted a major international human rights gathering bringing together leading Women Human Rights Defenders from around the world to share their stories and shine a spotlight on the role of women in pursuing justice. This annual gathering will seek to engage and empower participants to deepen civic commitment and to work together in common cause in the pursuit of justice and the advancement of women and human rights around the world.
