Historic Global Magnitsky Legislation Passes Unanimously
RWCHR Chair Irwin Cotler - who first tabled a Private Member’s Bill seeking Justice for Sergei Magnitsky - said that the legislation would "put Canada at the forefront of Global Justice and Accountability while combatting the cultures of corruption and criminality, and the impunity that underpin them.”
In celebrating Canada's historic adoption of this justice Legislation, Members of the Raoul Wallenberg All-Party Parliamentary Caucus for Human Rights were joined in Ottawa by the widow and son of Sergei Magnitsky [pictured below]. They gathered to remember, as Cotler put it, “the singular heroism of Magnitsky and the resilience and courage of his family; and to recognize Bill Browder’s steadfast commitment and courage in pursuing the adoption of this legislation."
Cotler underscored that Canada must now become “a global leader in mobilizing the community of democracies to adopt such legislation in the pursuit of justice. We must hold major human rights violators - wherever they are - to account.”
